65-75 Atlantic Coast Cup
by Tom Larkin
"The
best tennis weekend I have ever had" said one of the New England
players as we left Sleepy Hallow Country Club in Tarrytown N.Y. He was talking
about the Atlantic Coast Cup matches held on August 3rd and 4th between the
four Northeast sections of the USTA for 65 and 75 men. Eastern narrowly
defeated New England in the first match 3 to 2. At 1st singles, Jack Moter lost to highly nationally ranked Don Long
of Eastern 6-0 6-0. At 2nd singles, George Lynch lost a squeaker to Dan Wszolek of Eastern 5-7 6-2 6-2.
The news gets better
in the doubles. At 1st doubles, John Swan and Ted Underwood pulled an
upset beating Gordon Aydelott and Jim Carlin [Eastern] 3-6, 6-3 7-5.
Roy Anderson and Bob Dilworth also defeated Eastern`s Sam Corso and John
Gorsky by a score of 6-2, 6-3. But at third doubles, PeterFiore and Paul
Gallowich [Eastern] edged Tom Larkin and Omer Menard 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6).
In the battle for
third place N. E. lost to Middle States [Philadelphia area] 4 matches to 1.
1st
singles: Charles Smuck (MS) defeated Jack Moter 6-2, 6-3
2nd
singles: Mark Forrester (MS) defeated George Lynch 6-1, 6-2
1st
doubles: George Hoffman/Jim Blatt (MS) defeated John Swan/Ted Underwood 6-4, 7-5.
2nd

7-6, 10-8
In 3rd
doubles, Tom Larkin and Omer Menard averted a shutout by defeating Charles
Freeman and George Sawchuk of Middle States 6-1, 6-3.
The 75`s also went
down to defeat even though Don Frahm had two impressive wins at first singles.
Also of note was Irving Levine and Marvin Sears at 2nd doubles
losing two tight matches but giving away a “few” years (Irving is over 85 and
Marvin is over 80!).
New England has a
big task to come up with a proper venue for next year which comes close to what
we have experienced in the past two years. If you have a suggestion, contact
